Welcome to the Voices of K’gari Conference 2025

Presented by the University of the Sunshine Coast, this is a unique gathering supported by the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation, the Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, the Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO) and FINIA - the Natural Integrity Alliance for K’gari and other key partners.

This event is your chance to engage with groundbreaking research and cultural insights about K’gari and the Great Sandy Region. Join us to explore citizen science, cultural knowledge, and academic research.

Key themes
  1. Cultural knowledge and heritage management: This theme encompasses the documentation of cultural knowledge, archaeological data, and the influence of cultural practices like burning on the ecosystem and cultural heritage.
  2. Environmental and ecological dynamics: Includes the risks and management of beach and coastal dynamics, marine environments, freshwater and aquifer systems, and the impact of geological and soil processes on cultural heritage and climate change.
  3. Biodiversity and biological processes: Focuses on the effects of fire and climate change on vegetation communities, cultural resources, and the risks to rare and threatened flora and fauna.
  4. Visitor and resource management: Addresses the impacts of visitation on species such as Wongari and the overall management of natural and cultural resources.
  5. Sustainability and climate change: Explores the interconnectedness of natural processes, cultural heritage, and the implications of climate change on the island's ecosystem and cultural practices.

Before making your submission, it is a requirement to read the call for abstracts guidelines for contributions. 

We also recommend reviewing the selection criteria.
